Why Amazon?

I know that there are many attractive places to sell online, but when you are first getting started you need focus.

Amazon makes the most sense as the place for you to start for several reasons, mainly relating to:

  • Time

  • Odds of Success

For example, using Amazon allows you to tap into their 310 million active users. Over 100 million of them use Prime.

And thanks to FBA, you can have Amazon handle the majority of fulfillment work – work that is both time consuming and not very fun.

You won’t have to build websites, set up marketing campaigns, build email lists, or any of that. There’s time for that later once you are profitable. For now, let Amazon handle all that so you can focus on generating your first revenue.

There’s also the fact that Amazon is where the majority of e-commerce is happening – around 50% of it based on recent figures.

In general, Amazon offers a lot of very attractive features for sellers, especially if you are just starting.

There are many people out there who like to complain about how Amazon treats sellers. They’ll complain about the fees, restrictions, and the fact that you can’t get customers’ email addresses.

It’s certainly not perfect – no platform is.

But in my experience, it’s much better than most, and it offers by far the greatest potential for new sellers to make money.

What are these strategies, anyway?

The strategies you’ll be learning for sourcing are called retail arbitrage.

Retail arbitrage refers to sourcing products from brick and mortar retail stores and then selling them for higher prices online.

There are really only three other techniques for sourcing inventory: wholesale, private label, and custom manufacturing. None of them are a great place for beginners to start.

Wholesale contracts are extremely tough to get if you don’t have any experience selling.

Custom manufacturing is great if you have a solid product idea, but it requires by far the largest start up costs.

Private labeling (putting your own brand on an existing product that is generally sourced from China) is trendy, but it requires large start up costs and you have to create brand new Amazon listings and struggle to get attention.

Retail arbitrage offers some big advantages over these alternatives…

  1. You can use existing sales data and product listings.
  2. You don’t need a lot of money to source inventory.
  3. You can find things to sell at local stores that you already shop at.

You don’t need to invent your own products or take on the challenge of ranking on Amazon.

You simply find products that already exist, rank, and sell well (and for more) on Amazon, then send them in to FBA warehouses and let Amazon take care of the rest.

You don’t have to guess if an item will sell or make you money. Amazon’s own Seller App will tell you exactly how well a product sells and for what price.

All you have to do is find products that are underpriced in local stores and get them to Amazon warehouses.
